Some main points are:

1. Olga is actively looking for committed team players as now is Lucy – we have 2 ladies teams and are hoping we can attract more team players to help us climb back up to where we used to sit in the tables.

2. Ashley took over the seconds and even though hasn’t always played owing to uni commitments, he has captained the seconds to 1st place finishes in both seasons making this team the ‘team of the year’ in terms of results. Keep it up lads!

3. The mens firsts have been making the most of our performance juniors – Robin has played several times and Ryan’s recent debut saw him gain a convincing 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 wins with Simon over strong players. We anticipate once Dominic and Ashley have finished Uni soon they will be well placed to help us climb again.

4. Well done to mens teams 3 and 5 for promotions both seasons and we think the 4ths will be adjusted to 2nd place in summer so well done too. The 6ths also managed a promotion in winter.

Team Tennis Results 2019:

Our Aegon teams were in action over the spring. The Men’s first team, having been promoted the year before, managed a very respectable mid-table finish in division 4 and will look to improve further next season. Well done to the players involved: Simon Burgess, Chris Keating, Mike Needham, Ashley Horsman, Arthur Ewins, Robin Mcalpine, Dominic Sandy & Shaun Malcolm.

For the first time, we also entered a new Men’s second team, competing in only one division lower than our first team in division 5. The season proved to be difficult, but we look forward to a more competitive league next year. Well done to all those involved: Taegun Kim, Chris Smith, Colin Jones, Russell Vovsey, Adam Tomes, Joshua Marshall, Ashley Horsman, Bryan Nielsen & Jack Harvey.

We also entered a U14 Boys team in the South East Premier Division. This is the highest possible level, with a 1st place finish giving qualification to the National Finals. Cheam LTC finished runners up in the division after winning 3 out of 4 matches. Well done to the team on a fantastic result, despite only just missing out on the National Finals. The players involved were Robin Mcalpine, James Beaven, Ryan Papazov, Arthur Ewins & Callum Dickson.

I do wish to thank everyone who plays and hope the experience is enjoyable for all concerned!

Performance Centre Award

We have some exciting news to share with you all which will form part of the club vision into the future.

As you know Shaun Malcolm has been working very hard under Amit’s coaching company to deliver top quality coaching to a group of talented juniors at Cheam LTC. Many of these juniors are ranked inside the top 10 for Surrey for their respective age groups.

Off the back of this and the fact that our performance programme has grown to be one of the best in the area, the LTA has awarded Cheam LTC Performance Centre status for Surrey, an achievement matched only by 12 other clubs in the county.

Huge congratulations to all those involved, including the players and parents. We are very proud to have been awarded this status and look forward to displaying a special golden plaque outside the hut.

Our special thanks go to Shaun for making this happen and ensuring our coaching is among the best available.

Surrey County Cup Team

Cheam LTC are very proud to have 3 representatives of the Surrey County team.

Well done to two of our junior members, James and Robin, who have been competing for the Surrey U14 County Cup team. The team beat Hampshire on the 6th May to make it through to the finals in Nottingham.

And look who else is there! Our very own Shaun, who recently joined Amit’s coaching team, is the captain of the team.

We wish the team good luck in Nottingham on the 17th-19th May.

When entering, consider your availability both for Finals Day and the week before. If you are away for finals day or the week before, please do not enter as it is likely you would need to withdraw, and it is not fair to other players.

Finals Day is on Saturday 20th July. Everybody is welcome to come and watch the finals of the different categories. We will send an email the day before of the order of play for the day. It is a good chance for all the members to socialise and support the club.

We hope to see as many of you playing or supporting on the day as possible!

Handicap & Higgins Finals 2019

Some great tennis on show at this year’s season opener event – The Handicap & Higgins Finals.

Handicap Singles Final

Congratulations to Dan Jelicic for winning the Handicap Singles Final. Both players played off scratch, but Dan had the better of Plamen and secured the two sets 6-1 6-1.

Result: Dan Jelevic beat Plamen Zaychev 6-1, 6-1

Higgins Doubles Final

Congratulations to Peter Jones and Joshua Marshall for winning the Higgins Doubles Final. Lucy & Jeremy got off to a good start and narrowly won the first set in a tie-break. However, Peter & Josh fought back to take the second set 6-1 to take the match to a Championship tie-break decider. In an epic contest, Peter & Josh secured the victory, after Lucy & Jeremy saved a number of match points.

Result: Peter Jones & Joshua Marshall won 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11).

Notable points:

  1. We lost several of our highest standard ladies a year or so ago and although interest is growing there is still a long way to go to get the ladies team back to where it used to be. Olga is doing a good job in getting matches arranged but we need more ladies to play and hope to be now in a position where some of the newer ladies will play for us soon.
  2. Josh and Jonathan continue to manage the 4ths and 5ths and are using junior players and young adults more now that it is apparent that their standard is improving rapidly – a testament to our coaching programme.
  3. Congratulations to Dominic Sandy who having won the club doubles championships finished the summer league undefeated in the first team and the official number 1 player out of the 32 players that played in the division.
  4. We face more than ever now an increasing demand for team tennis participation. Thanks to Amit for his coaching, a number of juniors and students now play and will be playing more. As ever we aim to include everyone who wants to play matches but it may mean you don’t play every match. Any concerns should be swiftly brought to the attention of the team captain and if not dealt with can be referred up to the committee.  Please seek to resolve any difficulties early and with the appropriate captain.

Men’s Aegon 2018

Cheam played in Division 5 West this year once again and ended in 1st place. We will re-enter division 4 West next year and hope to do better than last time we were there.

Players included Mike Needham, Simon Burgess, Chris Keating, Jack Harvey, Colin Jones, Dominic Sandy, Ashley Horsman and Taegyun Kim. I do wish to thank everyone who plays and hope the experience is enjoyable for all concerned. We look forward to next season when we hope to have enough players to enter a second Men’s team

Junior Aegon 2018

Cheam’s U16 boys finished 2nd this year and so will be promoted next year. Thanks again to Olga for arranging and to the boys themselves – I can certainly say witnessing the matches the standard has become very high. Well done to Matthew, Lewis, Tim and Daniel.

Thank you to all our players and captains and I wish you all good luck with your matches over the coming season at Cheam LTC.
